Officials of the Cayce Police Department confirmed that an officer had been killed in the line of duty Sunday Morning.

The department made the announcement on Facebook stating that at approximately 2:48 AM on Sunday, April 24th, they received a call of a domestic disturbance on Rossmore Drive in Cayce. The male suspect opened fire when they approached the home and shot one of the Cayce Police Officers, killing him.

Police negotiated with the man for seven hours. The negotiation ended when the suspect, 36-year-old Austin Henderson, took his own life.

Officer Drew Barr was 27 years old and had been an important part of the Cayce family since 2016. Barr was a 2017 graduate of the Criminal Justice Academy. He’d been promoted to the K-9 unit in 2020.

On Monday, Barr’s body was escorted by fellow officers from the Lexington County Coroner’s Office. South Carolina’s Governor Henry McMaster released a statement about Barr on Monday.
